Example text

It slowly closed most doors and, like a blanket, covered everything we had known as secure. It seemed as though some powerful hand had slowly turned out the lights on our beautiful Seventh Avenue. CHAPTER 6 Noche Buena: The Good Night TURKEY DINNERS, so important to and symbolic of the American celebrations of Thanksgiving and Christmas, defined my youth. My American schoolmates spoke enthusiastically about turkey, especially at the holidays. I had no part in those discussions. My circle of school friends included Bill Dawkins and Michael and Robert Wilson.

The loaves looked like baguettes, only they were somewhat wider and thicker. We topped the feast with turrón, a very rich almond confection imported from Spain. This was eaten only at Christmas, for it cost a pretty penny. Home-made raisin wine accompanied the meal. Mother fermented the wine in five-gallon crockery containers. When it was ready, she siphoned it into one-gallon jugs. She made the wine one year for the next. We buried the seven or eight gallons she made in the back yard about two feet under ground; at the same time, we uncovered the previous year’s batch.

After she left, we scurried around the house getting ready for school, fixing our bologna sandwiches, eating buttered bread and drinking cafe con leche (coffee with milk), our daily breakfast. We gave the house a quick onceover to make it ready for the hypothetical stranger who might bring us home sick or injured. Before I was old enough to go to school, I walked daily through the back yard, across the alley, to Mrs. Byna’s house. An ancient, large, unpainted, and weathered duplex, it sat alone on the half-block of lots which, in the past, must have held a number of its counterparts.
