It can be so defined in the etymological sense of scepticism (which denotes a process of inquiry or examination), if not in any more specific philosophical sense (and this is an issue which I will not pursue here). Now, it might be that anarchist scepticism is motivated by a particular moral commitment (to the values of freedom, equality, community or some combination of these). We might doubt that all forms of authority satisfy our values. ) But this is not necessarily the case. As Simmons explains (with reference only to the state), certain anarchists do not make ‘any prior commitment to particular values (which the state is seen as violating).

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of authoritative relations from a philosophical point of view (quite apart from how these relations might be described and explained, say, sociologically) concerns the practical reasoning of those who are subject to authority. How does authority figure in their reasoning? A number of philosophers have sought to answer this question. Basically, they have endeavoured to show that authority does not require that its subjects ‘surrender their judgement’: that it is not, as it were, wholly at odds with reason.

What would a conceptually clear and rigorously argued anarchism (from outside these traditions) look like? Here we can cite the example of Alan Carter – not necessarily to endorse his substantive claims, but to draw attention to his philosophical approach. Carter is impressed by the fact that Marxist theory after G. A. Cohen ‘has evolved into a form that can hold its own within the anglophone tradition of analytical philosophy’ and wonders whether anarchist theory could evolve to the same point.
