I first left the collage to pursue a profession in metallurgical learn and nuclear expertise. yet I quickly stumbled on myself drawn again to the uni versity to 'round out' a very really good schooling. It was once alongside this course that i used to be 'waylaid' into philosophy via lecturers like H. L. Van Breda and Bernard Boelen. The philosophy division at Duquesne college used to be then (1958-1962) a veritable "little Louvain," and the Belgian-Dutch connection uncovered me to (among different vacationing students) Jean Ladriere and Joe Kockelmans, who planted the seeds which finally led me to the hybrid self-discipline of a hermeneutics of usual technology, and brought on me quickly after commencement to make the 1st of various prolonged visits to Belgium and Germany. The activity to profit French and German led me to the duty of translating the phenomenological literature bearing specifically on normal technological know-how and on Heidegger. the debate within the sixties was once of a "continental divide" in philosophy among Europe and the Anglo-American international. yet in designing my classes within the philosophy of technology, I clearly gravitated to the works of Hanson, Kuhn, Polanyi and Toulmin with no initially absolutely figuring out why I felt one of these powerful kinship with them, past their universal anti positivism.

The respect which Kaufmann extends to Cassirer also applies to Kaufmann himself. Marburg meant educationally to Cassirer what Gottingen and Freiburg meant to Kaufmann. An example of Kaufmann's personality, as told to Paul Schilpp by Marvin Fox, will further clarify the picture. One day at Northwestern Fritz Kaufmann was called upon to teach a colleague's Freshman class in philosophy. He asked Marvin Fox, an ordained rabbi and then graduate student, for advice. Fox was to Kaufmann like a son. Kaufmann's own son had tragically fallen to his death while mountaineering.
But as time went by the promises that had been given him did not materialize. Kaufmann felt rather miserable during the years at Buffalo. Like the parents of Werner Marx, the later semi-official occupant of Heidegger's chair at Freiburg, Kaufmann did not want to return to Germany after the war. , Adorno, Arendt, Bloch, Cassirer, Horkheimer, Marcuse), Kaufmann had suffered too much pain, as Thomas Mann had also, to settle in post-war Germany. Switzerland served for many of these emigres as a German-speaking substitute for their former homeland.
Flaubert put it this way: "l'auteur dans son oeuvre doit etre comme Dieu dans l'univers - present partout et visible nulle part" (the author must be in his work like God in the universe - he must be everywhere but nowhere visible. Kaufmann, 1960, 131). Kaufmann states that this utopian nothingness turns into the artist's all. Somehow the artist seems to feel himself still connected with the creative powers of Being. Narcissism and objectivism are the result of such self-assuring creativity. Every image becomes symbol for this activity; emptiness is absorbed and recreated in a "transfigured", though still empty form.
